Snow Day Fun: Tips for Making Memories

Snow Day Fun: Tips for Making Memories

Over the years, my girls and I have created so many special snow day memories. As I sit on the couch with a cup of Cold Support Tea from Wild Webb Farm (a local, magical, organic tea maker), I’m eagerly awaiting the winter storm headed our way. I’d love to share some ideas for making your snow day magical—both outdoors and indoors!

Outdoor Fun: Tips and Ideas

1. Dress for Success

Stay warm and dry with these layers:
- Base Layer: Insulated base layer and Merino Wool socks.
- Outerwear: Waterproof snow pants/bibs, insulated snow boots, hoodie or sweatshirt, thick coat, hat, scarf, and waterproof gloves (zip-up styles are great!).
- Extra Warmth: Use moxa heat packs (but don’t place directly on skin—they get hot!).
- Budget-Friendly Gear: Check second-hand stores or online options like Sierra Trading Post for great deals.

2. Create the Perfect Snow Day Environment

- Sledding: Find a safe hill nearby, like a gentle slope for little legs. For toddlers or kids under 3, use a sled with a seat and backrest for extra comfort.
- Snow Play Ideas:
     - Make snow angels.
     - Build small snowmen using sticks, rocks, or other natural “decorations.”
     - Create snow art with water and food coloring in spray bottles.
     - Try ice bubbles for a magical effect (link below).
     - Go inside afterward and make snow cream!

3. Keep Expectations Low

- If your kids only last a few minutes outside, that’s okay! Celebrate the time you spent together.
- Younger kids may tire or complain quickly, but as they grow, they’ll build resilience and enjoy longer outdoor adventures.

4. Prepare for Coming Back Inside

- Place a large rug or towel near the door to catch snow and water.
- Use a basket or bin for wet snow clothes to keep the space tidy.

Indoor Fun: Cozy and Creative Ideas

When it’s time to warm up inside, keep the fun going with these activities:

- Marshmallow Snowball Fight: Safe, silly, and fun!
- Blanket Forts: Use chairs and blankets to build cozy hideaways.
- Hide and Seek: A great way to entertain your kids while sneaking in some tidying.
- Cook Together: Make a yummy soup as a family.
- Obstacle Course: Get moving by creating a mini indoor challenge.
- Snow-Themed Movie: Curl up under blankets and watch “Frosty the Snowman” or a snowy favorite.
- Board Games: The Bluey Scavenger Hunt game is a hit with my 3-, 5-, and 8-year-olds!
